Journalism Scholarships

Applicants should be aware that these positions are deadline intensive, may require up to 18 hours of work a week outside of class (including some nights), and require registering for a production course (MDIA 2210 or 3210). Additional courses may be required for certain positions. Strong written, technical and oral communication skills are necessary. Applicants must also have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA and maintain a 12-credit course load each semester. Scholarship amounts vary by position. Recipients will be required to sign a contract that outlines their responsibilities and holds them accountable for meeting them.

Editor-in-Chief

Responsible for completing layout, writing headlines, making assignments, generating story ideas, conducting meetings, communicating with and managing staff, editing stories, and producing content ranging from stories to multimedia. InDesign experience is required. Layout is completed Mondays and Tuesdays.

Section Editors

One each for News, Features, Opinion and Sports. Editors are responsible for completing layout, writing headlines, making assignments, generating story ideas, editing stories, and producing content ranging from stories to multimedia. InDesign experience is preferred but not required. Layout is completed Mondays and Tuesdays.

Photo Editor

Responsible for assigning photos/graphics/ illustrations, producing weekly content, editing art and captions, managing photographers, and collaborating with editors. Photoshop experience is required.

Multimedia Editor

Responsible for assigning, producing and supervising multimedia content (specifically videos), training staff members in multimedia production, updating content on the website, and serving as an assistant news director for the broadcast.

Copy Editor

Responsible for editing the entire newspaper and website, writing headlines/summaries/captions, and producing content ranging from stories to multimedia. Some layout may be required. Newspaper editing is completed Mondays and Tuesdays. Knowledge of AP Style is required.

Social Media Editor

Responsible for managing all Dixie Sun social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, etc.), tracking staff members’ social media usage and analytics, training staff in social media, launching marketing campaigns, and producing content ranging from stories to multimedia.. Experience with social media platforms required.

Graphic Designer

Responsible for designing weekly advertisements and info graphics for the newspaper and website. May assist in newspaper layout on Mondays and Tuesdays. Design experience required, InDesign experience preferred.

Photographer

Responsible for completing up to five photo assignments and writing captions weekly.

Writer

Responsible for writing two stories weekly either for all sections or mainly in sports.

Multimedia Reporter

Responsible for writing one story and producing accompanying multimedia (photos and/or videos) weekly either for all sections or mainly in sports. Video/photo experience preferred but not required.

Video Reporter

Responsible for producing and editing two video packages weekly to be published on dixiesunnews.com and the broadcast for all sections or mainly in sports. Video production and editing experience preferred but not required. Pre-/co-requisite: MDIA 1130 and 1380. Averages 18 hours/week. 3 credits

Advertising Manager

Responsible for selling advertising, billing, signing contracts, maintaining and developing client relations, and collaborating with editor-in-chief to market the Dixie Sun. Design experience is helpful but not required. This is a paid position based on commission that might also come with a scholarship depending on eligibility.
